BOSTON AND DISTRICT SILVER LINKS FORUM

A forum is “a place of public discussion” and in Roman times this usually took place in the market or centre of the city. A place where many people could gather, to listen and learn from the speakers and from each other.

The Boston & District Silver Links Forum offers a place for public discussion and an opportunity to meet people and exchange ideas, just like in Roman times. The only difference being that the Boston & Silver Links Forum is aimed at people over the age of 55 and meets in comfortable venues as opposed to on the street!

The idea of a forum for older people has come about because older people have a tremendous amount to offer the community because of their life-long skills and experiences. In today’s modern world, a retired person can expect to live a healthy, full-filled life for many, many years. There are numerous opportunities for senior citizens to get involved and make a difference to not only their own quality of life but for the community at large. The Boston & District Silver Links Forum is one such opportunity.

The Forum organises a venue for speakers to come and talk to older people about issues that affect them and their local community. The Forum is conscious that not everyone lives in Boston, so makes an effort to go to the surrounding villages to hold its meetings as well.

Those present at the meetings hear first hand how services operate, including the barriers and constraints that often prevent effective delivery. At the forum, questions can be raised and full discussions can take place. Often, valid and useful suggestions are voiced by the Forum members as to how services might be improved. To date, issues such as healthy living, education, toe-nail cutting and access to various health clinics have been addressed. Upcoming issues planned are security, policing, energy saving, quality of care in nursing homes and GP out of hours services.

The forums are not another social club, although there will be opportunities for sharing ideas and meeting new people. Forums do not provide advice but might sign-post individuals to organisations and agencies that can provide support. Forums do not provide any services directly.

Forums are about sharing information and learning about the community. Forums represent the views of older people directly – there is no go-between. No other organisation can be the true voice for older people except the older people themselves! The Boston & District Silver Links Forum is that voice. The voice that can truly influence policy and practice in local and national services delivery.

So, would you like to be better informed and have your say? Do you think you would like to meet other people with an interest in issues affecting the older people of Boston and District? Would you like to share your views and listen to others who might share your same thoughts? Do you think you would like to be a member of the Forum? Would you like to know more?
